How do I seize rid of chiggers and/or chigger bites?

good ask when i take my dog out to use the bathroom they get through me alive.
My Dad worked in the mountains for the forestry service for 30+ years and he use to put a wipe of clear fingernail polish on them when he got them. It smothers them so they die.
