does anybody know what antiseizure medications do to stop seizure from occuring? In other words how do they work? How do antiseizure medication effect the brain?
They increase the seizure threshold by increasing inhibitory flurry. They work in other ways as economically. There are many classes of anti-epileptics. There are benzodiazepines and phenobarbital which work at the GABA receptors. There is phenytoin (dilantin) and carbamazepine (tegretol) which work by stabilizing the inactivated state of sodium channel thereby making it less potential for an action potential to ensue. There is Vaproic Acid (Depakote) which also works at the GABA receptors. It inhibits the breakdown of GABA and GABAergic compounds.
by enhancing GABA (gaba amino butyric acid) an inhibitory neurotransmitter in neurons (nerve cells). Thru this inhibition, ectopic (outside of normal) guts depolarization (firing) is lessened.
