Cold sores look like bumps or blisters and usually start on the oral cavity, are caused by a viral infection, and are contagious. OTOH, canker sores are in fact a kind of sore and are always within your mouth, are open and prickly but *NOT* contagious, and can be caused by several factors including stress, spicey food, allergies, etc.
